SAYING GOODBYE TO MY GIRLFRIEND.

Zoe
December 20 2001-April 10, 2o15

I said goodbye to my best girlfriend today.

The minute Zoe laid eyes on Jake, when I brought her home from California to Michigan, she adored, and tortured him.  He was patient, and tolerated her, but I am not sure he ever had the deep feelings she had for him.  Today, they are both gone.

Fierce, that about sums up our independent little girl.  No groundhog, mouse or rat was safe if she spotted them.    She was so smart.   She would watch carefully where the ball was thrown and wait to see if Jake had been paying attention.  She would never challenge him, but if he went in the wrong direction, she would retrieve the round object, come back to me, lie down and dare him to take it away from her.  A great big tease.

She thought there was nothing better than the morning walks, especially if deer ran across our path.  I can’t remember how many times I spent the morning tracking her down after she disappeared on her chase.  She lived a good life here on the farm.  Constantly tracking rabbits, finding a cool spot in the shade on the patio, and running after a tractor or ATV in the afternoons.   She also would sing for us sometimes, if she thought we were not moving fast enough to accommodate here needs.  Sweet little Zoe was always at the back door waiting for us to come home. Her little face framed in the window.

For sure, Zoe was a daddy’s girl.  Frank was the object of her attention, when he was around, I could count on her being close by him. Frank always laughed, whenever he opened the draw that the almonds were in, it would not matter where she was in the house, she would come running.  I would look in the study, and there they were Frank and Zoe eating nuts.

When Parker came into the house, she made sure he knew who was boss.  I was a little worried at first, but it did not take long for her to accept him in her life.  He was another running buddy, Jake had gotten a little to old to follow her on adventures, but Parker was ready to go.

Then Sadie came along.  Sadie would run around the sofa in fast circles, and Zoe, beginning to show her age, would occasionally catch her and they would spar, until I intervened, because they were driving me nuts.  I was surprised how much Zoe enjoyed the chasing and wrestling with Sadie.  They were friends.

So in the end they leave us, too short is their life. But if I were to imagine my life with out Zoe, it would not have been the same.  A friend told me, don’t be sad it is over, be glad that it happened.  With time I may be able feel that way.  Frank and I  loved her, respected her individual nature, and will miss her deeply.

We buried her by the garden with her favorite pink ball. She hated the water, so I let her rest up close to the garden where I will be close to her, rather than down next to Jake by the river, but she is on the hill in the front yard with a view down the field to where he rests.
