That for sure is what summer is all about. Ok, ok, I know that I have not be very diligent about posting on my blog, but I guess I needed a break. So I am back now, how reliable remains to be seen. Lots has happened since my last post. Visitors have come and gone, bees have come back to live here on the farm in newly renovated houses, new plants grace the gardens and new trees have been planted in the yard. Hopefully I can get them all of them in the coming weeks and give you a peek at what is going on. The photo in todays blog is courtesy of Jacob Z. It was the inspiration for writing a bit on the blog.

ZACHARY

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/TF63Q4ec5mI/AAAAAAAAAYA/rpdlLdk-Y-o/s400/Zach.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503037295359223394" />
On Thursday, August 5, 2010, our friends lost their 19 month old Standard Poodle to AIHA, a devastating disease. All the while, taking in the abundance of birds and other wildlife in the gardens around the house and the fields and woods around the farm. That was the events of last week when Karen and Nels, my dear friends from California, paid a visit to Puck’s Glen. I stopped long enough to hear the call of a Bobwhite and actually spot him on his perch, I would never have known that the Brown Thrasher was a visitor to my yard or been entertained by watching the young male Orchard Oriole dart about in the trees and sing. There were discussions of what books were being read, and sharing in the news of friends and family. Although I took them to the airport yesterday, they left behind pieces of themselves that will stay with me as I make my way around the edges on my morning walks with the dogs and tend to the gardens that sustain me.. So chatty too. They are sometimes hard to spot, but you know they are there by their incessant conversations. We are finally having temperatures out of the 50's and the rain has cleared, so now maybe we can really count on warm days ahead. The juvenile Eagle has fledged. It happen the end of last week with a tentative flight and awkward take off from the corn field, but now he seems to have really mastered this flying thing. He took off from a branch right above my head and soared out over the river this morning as the 4 of us made our way down the lane. Zoe is on her usual spring time schedule of constant patrol for the stray rabbit that she might catch off guard enough to actually capture. It is hard to count on anything constant. Rainy in the 50s, sunny windy, in the 90's, back to cloudy but 75. The plants experience their own set of problems with these changes, being misted and happy one day, hot and parched the next. I think the ideal temperature for any plant in about 70, but thank goodness they have adapted otherwise they would be in a dire state.
The males always appear on my radar first. They are the orneriest boys about having others in their territory. They dart about in the and out of the trees at lighting fast pace chasing being chased. Their rusty colored breasts catch the sun with quick flicks as the sun comes up. The Orchard Oriole males will be happy to know that I finally spotted the female today, although I somehow think they already knew that she was here.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S-BcWbvs8lI/AAAAAAAAAW0/3Xbz7TMIL6Q/s200/IMG_0104.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467471488102494802" />The most prevalent sound along the edge of the woods this time of year is the drumbeat and trill of the woodpeckers that inhabit the stream bed. They tap away at bark of the trees and call back and forth to each other incessantly. I can hear different pitches to the tapping and the calls, but the only one I am successful at identifying by sound, currently, is the Flicker. I do spot the Pilated, the Downy, and the Red Belly Sap Sucker, but I can't identify them by their calls yet. I downloaded iBird pro onto my iPhone, which I hope helps me increase my identification skills.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S-BcXPVZ6KI/AAAAAAAAAW8/q80HvxUw3NM/s200/IMG_0079.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467471501950838946" />On Sunday not much was happening in the garden. There of course has been a hugh flush of green as the plants spring up out of the ground, but flowers were few and far between. Lots of buds. The blossoms have the sweetest scent that pulls your attention to beautifully arranged florets as you pass by.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S7EEan5H9zI/AAAAAAAAAVw/bQOpRJMx68c/s200/IMG_0096.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454145479154071346" />The Killdeer are now officially parents in waiting. We have a pair of the screamers nested under the bench by the fishpond(4 eggs) and another pair in the east garden under one of the newly planted Birches(4eggs).
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S7EEZxtkLGI/AAAAAAAAAVo/9AMXwYdb3Rw/s200/IMG_0014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454145464610073698" />
Parker gives them no rest. He thinks they are great fun to chase as they scurry away to get him directed from their eggs. They are very successful, but he soon loses interest in the chase and is off to other adventures.
Our walk this morning was punctuated with the Fox passing very close by in the field, which sent Zoe on a mad dash to catch her nemesis. She really tries her darnedest, but her legs can not carry her quite as fast as the nimble little fox. She catches up to the group, as we move around the edge of the farm,having given up on the chase, with tongue out and breathless.
The Robins are here in great abundance, and I know I will be cleaning nests out of nooks and crannies, trying to redirect them to safer ground. Some will get by me and we will have to see about protecting them until they can hatch those little blue eggs and fledge their young. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S7DK6UKbMxI/AAAAAAAAAUY/7oi_A2tPFjc/s200/IMG_0119.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454082251939328786" />

SPRING FEVER

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S6EN9GhW9jI/AAAAAAAAATc/HMpAyG4J8eM/s400/IMG_0291.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449652367468721714" />
We may not be completely finished with the winter weather yet, but somehow that doesn't seem to matter when the air is warm and the sun is bright. Spectacular is all I can say for the the state of the outside world as we made our way around to explore the farm this morning. Lots of new discoveries. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S6EPVIAO3BI/AAAAAAAAATw/b8dlGi1furU/s200/IMG_0441.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449653879695137810" /> There is is a second Eagles nest being built in the woods, about 100 yards from the first. It is much smaller. We 4 were back in woods by the older nest this morning when a adult Eagle flew overhead and called an alarm He then settled in a tree not to far from the old nest waiting for us to leave. Next the skunk cabbage(Symplocarpus Foetidus) is in bloom, and that is a real indicator of warm weather to come. There is also an abundance of fungi growing, helped this spring by all of the moisture we have had. The crocus and early daffodils are bursting into bloom along the walkway.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S6EQiLcFfwI/AAAAAAAAAT8/OmB8V3q-Kp4/s320/IMG_0009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449655203467198210" />There is also evidence of the 1000 tulip and daffodil bulbs, I planted last fall, erupting through the soil. Now that is going to be something when that blooms. There are other little things starting to polk through the surface, but most prevalent are the weeds. Today will mark the official beginning of the war, for this year, against the pesky weed population. The task will put me outside in this glorious weather, which will make the work easier.

ALL HOPES DASHED

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S4ffhR5PvII/AAAAAAAAATE/d8qZpFCIOg0/s400/IMG_0076.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442564437532720258" />
The snow is coming down sideways! The point is not about the amount of snow, just that it is doing it once again. We will be spared the deep cover that those farther north will sustain, but still. There had been hope for the past few days. The warm sun was melting the snow banks, and a day of rain help to increase the melt as well, even as it turn the farm into one large mud hole. But now as I look out the window, it is again a whiteout.
Not that any of this phases Parker. Zoe has better sense, when I let her out she poked the air with her nose and turned right around to look back into the warm house. Jake is sort of impervious to anything, although the big bed in the back room was looking pretty good to him. He did not wander off to explore the property as he usually does in the morning. I made the executive decision to cut the daily walk very short this morning.
While all of this is happening I thought it a good time to order some seed and plants for the garden. Wishful thinking on my part I am sure.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S4fgLSbA4_I/AAAAAAAAATQ/YxYlFiDTcMg/s400/IMG_0026.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442565159228859378" />

IT IS OVER

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S27aPKORsyI/AAAAAAAAASw/TjemJKW0Hx4/s400/DSC01011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435521754259895074" />
We, Jake, Zoe, Parker and I, are confined to the roadway that Frank has begun to restore to a drive, instead of a cross country ski course after the 30" of snow that fell yesterday. The depth of the snow is too great to try to walk through. Parker of course hops across it with great energy, but the rest of us stay on the plowed surface not trying to breech the walls of snow. There is lots of enthusiasm for this snow, in particular little Parker, who finds the whole thing such a big adventure, but Jake and Zoe understand the fun of it all,too, scrambling ahead of me tussling with each other as we move. Even though the sun's energy is amplified by the reflection off the crystal surface of the snow, we will be days "melting" out of this, there is little warming predicted for the next week. The farm will remain under this white blanket of ice crystals for the time being.

ANOTHER 3 INCHES

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S2l8tP0QGCI/AAAAAAAAASU/llmQ6XqgzF0/s400/DSC00942.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434011542180861986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S2l8fbcB8VI/AAAAAAAAASM/wkI2dK2GYuM/s320/DSC00908.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434011304782328146" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S2l8fLuKZUI/AAAAAAAAASE/Rklq0NpGIpQ/s320/DSC00924.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434011300563412290" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 253px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/S2l8eow1j9I/AAAAAAAAAR8/YUYXnk35VbM/s320/DSC00913.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434011291179388882" />
The snow just keeps coming. I have not experienced this amount of snow since moving to the Eastern Shore. Mostly it has snowed a bit but not consistently throughout the winter, never hanging around to long. It certainly dresses up the farm, but I am ready for some other kind of weather. It is February, how much longer can this last? The sun will come up and warm the air making the snow slip from the branches and slide noisily from the roof. The patio and walkways will begin to uncover and show through the snow, waiting for the next offering from the sky.

MAJOR SNOW STORM BLANKETS THE FARM

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sy5Z7lnxRTI/AAAAAAAAARU/1CVDq4chlgo/s400/DSC00842.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417366282019358002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sy5ZuSDiSTI/AAAAAAAAARM/JIQ5xUeyAZc/s400/DSC00841.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417366053428807986" />
We are heading into Christmas week, which for sure will be white. The farm has been blanketed over a 36 hour period with snow. It is difficult to say exactly how much, because of the drifting, but I would say somewhere around 2 feet, give or take a few inches. There is a drift by the front door that is well over 5 feet high. The snow started early in the morning on Saturday, continued all day and night Saturday, and when I took Parker out this morning at 4 it was still snowing. It has stopped now, and the sun is shinning. The front walk has been cleared, and the long drive packed so that we can get in and out. It is a strange feeling out here on the farm when there is a big storm. It somehow makes you feel much more alone, than if you are in closer proximity to neighbors. We survived, and now the dogs have a glorious playground in which to romp. This was Parker's first real snow, and oh boy did he think it was some kind of wonderful. He is in now, exhausted and curled up asleep. I suspect he will stay that way throughout the rest of the day. Tuckered out.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sy5aUdd_H_I/AAAAAAAAARc/7oq6_UF2z3k/s400/DSC00847.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417366709327568882" />

REVIVAL

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sx0TkthXUpI/AAAAAAAAAQY/2hFTr-YSycc/s400/DSC00792.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412503848584958610" />
Gosh, look how long it has been since my last post. Life has been busy, filled with all the mundane tasks that populate our lives, take up our time, but are somehow part of keeping everything together. There has been the great renovation, poor little Parker had an injury to his leg and Zoe has not been feeling well. With these things comes a steady procession of carpenters, electricians,painters, assorted installers, visits to the vet, the doctor, cleaning up plaster dust, and other messes, culling out clutter, and general organization. But now the way is clear and we are all back on course.
We had a storm over the weekend after I took the pictures that are posted. It was windy, cold and sleeting. A little accumulation of snow was a great adventure for Parker, who discovered that it was not only fun to play in, you could eat it too.
That is gone and the sun has been out. There was a definite change is the temperature though. It is frosty and cold in the dark mornings when Parker, Zoe, Jake and I venture out, and not until the sun is higher on the horizon line does the air start to warm some.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sx0T5ycuyyI/AAAAAAAAAQg/IJ_KqIo9E-I/s320/DSC00794.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412504210684955426" />With all of the activities of the past month, I did not get to walk around in the garden to watch the changes that come with the decreased light and cold temperatures. I have noticed the Camilla's by the back door. It is hard to miss the bloom, so abundant and seeming out of place in the winter landscape. My lettuce is now available for cutting. The glass has been put over the cold frame, and I am hoping that with it tucked in I will be able to use if for another month or so. The Parsley has gotten a little burned on top, but underneath there is still plenty of good leaves. I cut some of the bulb fennel and that was a great treat for dinner. I use to think that the garden was a total dead zone in the winter, but as I have discovered there is much to be appreciated as the cold removes the cacophony of blooms. It is much more subtle and requires a keener eye, but there is a beauty in the bare twigs,dry grasses and seed heads. There is also an amazing variety of green underneath it all trying desperately to gather up what light there is from the short days.

NOVEMBER,NOVEMBER,NOVEMBER

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SvBEPFG_hPI/AAAAAAAAAQM/c_3DJu-lK4E/s400/DSC00767.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399890979077457138" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SvBDIRZaDOI/AAAAAAAAAP8/wbb9cnTGp4Q/s320/DSC00771.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399889762605206754" />
It is official, the clocks have been set back, the leaves have past peak, and there is a certain smell that permeates the mornings. The rains took a tole on the leaves and color of the edge, but there is still plenty to see, and the gingkoes on the lane are still in the process of becoming brilliant. I have always hesitated to love the fall, because I knew it preceded the winter. I am now trying hard to enjoy what is today and not worry so much about what is tomorrow. A new leaf. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SvBDIGv3RTI/AAAAAAAAAP0/jx5NKDSP4d8/s320/DSC00756.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399889759746606386" />
Zoe got me up a few nights ago at 4 AM wanting to go out, not that usual, but then after a while she started incessant barking, I called, she did not come, I was finally able to locate her in the dark and drag her in the house. I suspected she had found something interesting in the form of a creature. Her frenzy continued through the morning, until it was finally light enough for me to investigate. I found a fox curled up in the grasses by the pond. It was clearly in physical distress, thin, didn't run away from me, barely lifting its head. The hunters had seen the same little fox a week earlier, falling down intermittently in the field. I got out the shot gun, and waited for the painting crew to arrive, asking if they could help me and the fox. I know I did the right thing, but it still preys on my mine.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SvBDnqaBOkI/AAAAAAAAAQE/PGBGSsWD1Gw/s200/DSC00773.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399890301894605378" />The river has been glorious. I wondered as he traveled out over the farm if he could see the ground and hunt prey through the heavy fog that was laying blanket like on the newly disked fields. I lost sight of him as he receded away from us. It was a far different picture, when I finally got everyone fed and watered, as I launched my shell onto the river. The fog was completely gone, there was a slight breeze, and the sun's warmth had dried the dew completely off the grass. There was an Eagle soaring overhead, was it one of the pair that lives in the woods here on the farm?
My favorite grasses are blooming now, they are ethereal with the dew and morning light. I must find a place in the garden for more of these Muhlenbergia capillaris.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/StIJ5WUwGnI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/ZoXPfuemmWU/s320/DSC00729.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391382584765717106" />Breakfast is not complete these mornings without a trip to the Fig Trees, to hunt for a few figs that have reached perfection while the trees are covered with sweet purplish brown ovoid fruits, for it is now a race for ripening before the first killing frost.

PUPPY EYES

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Ssnr8RzZsUI/AAAAAAAAAPI/cNl-4RE_DFM/s400/DSC00715.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389097849929183554" />
The chilly night air that is settled in for good now, has brought the not unexpected yellowing of the soy bean fields. Just brushed across the leaves here and there, the land is no longer the solid green that it was. I must bundle up more heavily or risk feeling cold. The woods have opened up from the leaves that have already left the branches, and there is a raucous display by the Pileated Wood-peckers this morning as the four of us make our morning round of the farm. I have not visualized them since last spring when the canopy was just filling in and there was just three of us. Sounds of fall are abundant with the h-ronk of the Canada Geese, and Caw-Caw of the Crows. The completely empty corn fields are waiting for the planting of the winter wheat, and serve as a great feeding area for the migrating geese. Up closer to the house there is still abundant bloom that, mixed with the beginning coloration of the leaves, make for a beautiful environment to sit and enjoy the crisp clear days of autumn.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SsnqaIJ0ENI/AAAAAAAAAPA/OH0Xa79bDSY/s320/DSC00698.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389096163711652050" />
Parker is growing so quickly. The ground was wet, and there was a slight coolness emanating from the North. Later the sun came out and it was warm. That is the rhythm of the weather now, some rain, cool then warm, sunshine and clouds.
I am sad to report that the tomato harvest is dropping off rapidly, the combination of shorter days, rain and cooler night temperatures is closing off that portion of the garden. I have replanted the lettuce beds for fall and winter harvest of greens, I am ready to also plant the garlic for spring harvest, and I see that cilantro that self seeded in the early summer is starting to grow, as are the larkspur. Some of the hydrangeas have missed the fact that winter is coming, producing new bloom just when they should be finished.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sr0h8JX4pPI/AAAAAAAAAOg/CYBP7egSAZ4/s320/DSC00607.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385498046596949234" />The little wren that skulks around in the garden every fall is here, the humming-
birds are not. I spotted a Palm Warbler in the back garden when I was sitting out on the deck with the dogs, along with a Blue Grosbeak.
The Eagles are into lots of activity in the woods by the river. They always take the opportunity this time of year to refurbish their nest for the arrival of the eggs in the winter. All manner of stick and twig are being moved in.
It is a beautiful time of year here on the farm. The stalks of corn are drying and rustle in the wind, some of the field has been harvested, leaving behind the stubble which opens up the views to the edge of the woods where there is the beginnings of a touch of color developing. The soybeans are still lush and green, but they are full of pods, and finished with the production of new ones. The process of drying is going to start.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sr0jJpUZ-UI/AAAAAAAAAO4/yb9cMTNU3KI/s200/DSC00615.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385499378022218050" />
I was sitting very still in the red chairs of wooded garden I have planted out the back door. I am not sure who was more shocked.

PARKER

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SrDY105XOJI/AAAAAAAAAOI/lMdjoqdEKIc/s400/DSC00591.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382039973951649938" />
The day came for Puppy #2 to make his way to Puck's Glen Farm. With a face that makes you want to smoother him in kisses, he is the cutest little bundle. Gladly running after you as you walk down the lane, hopping, tumbling, and rolling in the grass. The morning dew has settled in, and he is very shortly soaking wet. That does not seem to stop his romp. Jake is indifferent, the pup sensing this keeps his distance, although the few times the puppy runs in between Jakes legs, there is no response from the big guy. Zoe has become the the target of the puppies play. Scampering in and out of her legs, jumping up to play with her ear. Zoe is not sure yet, and occasionally warns him off with a growl, she also engages in a little play with him. The beginnings of a friendship?
It is not all cute and adorable. There is the need for constant supervision, the whining for attention, and the trips outside in the middle of the night for puppy peeing. Part of the "joys" of raising a puppy
Parker will grow up fast, take his place in the pack, and settle into this house which is now his own.

MORNING LIGHT

There was a slight wind from the Northeast that rustled the dry cornstalks as we started down the lane this morning for our walk. This is the first morning since spring that I grabbed a sweater to protect my arms from the chill. The grass was saturated with moisture from the condensation. The sky was clear blue. Fall. I don't know if we ever lose our memory of smell. I walked the hills with my good friends and we talked, laughed and watched the birds. What could be better.
I came home from that adventure to leave for Maine. This trip took me to the home of the young puppy that will soon be sharing the farm with us. 5 week old puppies, to cute to even describe.

So now I am home for a while. I was greeted with much interested by Jake and Zoe. They knew I had been with other dogs, and they were trying to find out as much about them as they could through their noses.

One of the guinea fowl met his demise while I was away. Now a solitary little guy prowls the property. It seems a little sad to me. Although they were often engaged in battles, they were always together. I wonder if he is lonely, I fear he must be.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Spq2blCifTI/AAAAAAAAAOA/GPzjbksPklU/s200/DSC00579.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375809690135592242" /> The gardens are going to seed. Cone flowers are now food for the gold finches. The daisies are completely gone, as is the penstemon. There is some re-bloom on an assortment of spring bloomers, lavender, clematis, and phlox, but it is sporadic and much less than the first flush.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Spq0PIMfhXI/AAAAAAAAANo/6SOEs0uqryI/s200/DSC00573.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375807277211026802" />The butterflies and hummingbirds, however, are being kept very happy with the salvias, scutellaria and antirrhinums which along with the warm season grasses are just coming into their full glory. Out the back door along the walk there is a full flush of bloom from the row of Cryopteris which I call butterfly alley.

<img style="float:left; The pears are almost ripe. This is the first year we will have much of a harvest. The figs are also maturing and starting to produce the fruit that is so sweet and good warmed by the sun, straight off the tree.

The sunlight is starting come later and leave earlier, but the garden will remain a delight for at least 2 more months.

PUPPY NEWS

<img style="display:block; "If I was a rich man" I would have fresh flowers all over the house, and clean, pressed sheets every night. I will have to settle for fresh cut flowers in the months of bloom. Today it was a big bunch of white phlox, I also could not resist mixing some of the blue and white mop head Hydrangias together. So now as I sit in front of the window wall looking over the garden watching an array of birds coming and going from the feeder and the birdbath, I am surrounded by the sweet scent and beautiful display of these vases.
There is an abundance of blooms open in the garden now.

WATCHING THE DAYS SHORTEN

The rains have stopped, at least temporarily. The sun is bright and things seem to be drying out. The mornings and evenings are delightful, a little less so during the day because of the humidity, but nothing to really complain about. The corn has shot up during the rain, and is now also enjoying the sun.
I have put some chairs out in the wooded part of the garden, in the shade of the London Plane tree. With bird feeders close by that becomes a perfect spot to sit quietly and watch all manner of bird fly in and out of cover in the late evening.
Fireflies are lighting up all over the fields, particular to the now dry wheat crop on the East side of the farm.
Did you realize we have pasted the longest day of the year?

WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS

Our weather has been marked by an abundance of rain, and mostly cool temperature. What one would think of as perfect garden growing. The garden is rich and abundant, for sure, but underneath the beauty lies the dark side. There is a rust on the Amelanchiers, and the contorted Mulberry, the heat loving, water intolerant pentstemon, lavender, thyme , and salvia are lovely, but up under their leaves the mildew and bacterial rot has started to show up.
Through the drought of last year and the year before, many plants struggled to survive the heat and dryness, now the plants that loved that weather are struggling. I guess that is how the garden is. Perfect one moment, and then poof, disaster.
It is hard for me to tell how jaded my view might be. Perhaps if I could stroll through the landscape, purged of the idea that it is my garden, I would see less flaws and more perfection. But, as I can not walk on the paths without stopping to pluck out a weed that always catches my eye, I am also unable to see just the beauty of what the rains have brought, without seeing the impending damage as well.

ALL ABOUT JACOB

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SiL7nxJrkNI/AAAAAAAAAIA/0TVgmHRK1-Q/s400/DSCN9977.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342108768642240722" />
Still in High School, he came to visit Puck's Glen Farm with his parents and little sister. Just a young boy really. Still asking for his dad to "flutter" him when he went to bed, which is, from what I could tell, a movement of raising the sheet high above the bed and letting it float down settling on the occupant.
I ask him to climb the ladder to change a light bulb for me, and upon completion, I said your hired. "Really, could I come work for you!". It was a done deal.
He came to me that summer, totally disarming me. Here was this young man, who loved to sit out on the porch with these old folks in the evening and watch the world of the farm slip into darkness. He saw his first fire fly, learned to mulch, dig, hoe, the difference between a weed and a wanted plant and drive the tractor. He help build the first shed, and made a lasting friendship with the man I got him a part time job with. I don't know if I have ever met such an open person before. No defenses, no large ego, confident, but humble, not to mention thoughtful and sweet.
He is back for a repeat this summer. He is more mature to be sure, but not much else has changed. He is still that open lovely man that I got to experience the first summer. It is bittersweet in the garden with him this year, as I know his life journey will take him on a road that will not allow for these litttle summer detours any more. He will marry, finish college, go on to graduate school, you know have a life. For right now though, I can share the joy of him learning to drive Big Blue Bertha the dump truck, watch him learn to do some woodwork with Frank, and know he will leave behind a legacy, here on the farm, where ever he has moved a stone, planted a tree, or placed an urn.

HELP HAS ARRIVED

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/ShKkAZ2EW7I/AAAAAAAAAH4/1gzlb2mfdvk/s400/DSC00316.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337508835232078770" />
I guess I have been out in the garden working, and not in the house blogging.
Work is moving forward at a fast a furious pace, now that I have reinforcements. Jacob(my nephew) has arrived to help out on the farm and in the garden for a couple of months. There will be more about him later, but one note, Jake my beloved boy now considers me only if Jacob is not in the vicinity. When we picked Jacob up at the airport, Jake and Zoe acted as if they were receiving the King back into their myst.
The Peonies are starting to bloom, with the rain yesterday their big buds started pulling the plant to the ground, a few blossom removed, they were upright again with the kitchen being the beneficiary.
The Killdeer couple on the walkway has successfully hatched all 4 eggs. The little chicks were out of the nest, running around on the lower driveway within 12 hrs. of leaving their shells, tucking back in under their parent when they were cold and tired, then off to the races again. It served as great entertainment as we sat out on the patio at days end. This morning as the poodles and I left for our walk, we scattered all of them much to the consternation of the parents. One very small chick was scurrying through the wet grass with great difficulty. I carefully picked him up depositing his fuzzy little body back onto the more easily traversed drive, and then we were on our way.

MIST

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 332px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SgXgzzlZZDI/AAAAAAAAAHg/-619DZ4WX64/s400/DSC00261.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333916514315232306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SgXgVvjfu4I/AAAAAAAAAHY/Fu2JCBmRLNc/s400/DSC00270.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333915997837441922" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SgXgGVHRy3I/AAAAAAAAAHI/txPr8lGhLKg/s320/DSC00268.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333915733041728370" />
The house had disappeared when I turned to look half way down the lane to the river. The mist is so thick I can't see the hedgerows, and the air has settled onto the grasses, making them wet. There has been day after day of rain, at times heavy with wind, at others light drizzle. But the grey, wet has been unrelenting. True it makes everything look fresh and new, the greens stand out more against the monochrome of the sunless sky. We do not let it dampen our spirits, Jake, Zoe and I. We can still walk the edges and marvel in the rapid growth of the forest canopy.

FIRSTS

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SftXhYqmkTI/AAAAAAAAAGE/UtXuQaLjMXI/s400/DSC00218.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330950814991552818" />
A single Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and two male Orchard Orioles, appeared in the garden yesterday. First sighting this year.
There is a new Robin's nest being built in the cherry tree, right next to the deck, this is the replacement for the nest that was abandoned on the deck chair. I fear too much activity prompted them to start over somewhere safer, after laying 4 eggs and starting the incubation for about a week. Not so for the steadfast little Killdeer. They continue to use every tool to protect their eggs. The best of all is the beginnings of a bud on my Gladiolus segetum. I planted this 3 years ago, with the caveat that is would need time to mature before it bloomed. It took its own sweet time growing up, and risk being destroyed by mistake every year if I forgot it was there. I have three, but only one is showing signs of a bloom. It better be glorious after all this time. The other bloomer this year (4 years in the making) is my Pseudocydonia sinensis(Chinese Quince).
I have received some of the plants that I ordered on line during the dark winter days when the garden seemed just dead. It is with great excitement and expectation that I unwrap and catalog each little verdure.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE

Today was plant rescue day. We went to the edge of the woods where the bank restoration is taking place to dig some of the endangered wildflowers growing in the path of tractor tires. I got some Dog Tooth Violets, Jack in the Pulpit, and Mayapple which will move into a spot under my hydrangeas in the back. I have been adding lots of leaf mulch to the soil to get it ready to receive these wonderful little addition. I would never dig these little native if they were not threatened. When I lived in Michigan, a group of us formed our own little rescue organization, to dig natives that were in eminent danger from future construction. We had pretty good luck relocating Trilliums, Jack in the Pulpit, and Dog Tooth Violets, so I am hopeful about today's digs. I was struck by the change a week has made. The open light, is gone as the tall trees add on more foliage creating a lush shady stream bed, for the grasses along the waters edge have grown to a height of 2 feet in the abundant light of the spring.
The erosion has been severe in the past, as the land on the West side slopes down towards the glen. At some point, who ever was farming here decided to have tires dumped to slow the process. We are now pulling the tires out(hundreds of them), so that we can stabilize the hill side. Disposal of all those tires is going to be pretty costly, but we have decided to take this environmental disaster on. The destruction of the fauna is inevitable, but the plans include restoration on completion.

ZERO TO NINTY IN 60 SECONDS

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SfS1qq6_2_I/AAAAAAAAAFU/6v38j2oio_s/s400/DSC00202.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329084003767016434" />
We had spring on Friday, summer followed on Saturday. The spring buds are not even open yet and they are being subjected to 90 degree heat.
The landscape of the mornings has changed. Instead of the walk around the edge, we all set off at 6 AM for the river, I'm driving the truck, Jake and Zoë trot along beside. My shell, the Mary Nicole, is atop the rack, and as I approach the river I see the mirrored surface waiting to take the boat. These are the carefree, warm mornings, where the river is a gift full of osprey, eagle, heron and peace. The fish jump, sometimes thumping the bottom of the boat or the oar. It is in this early morning light on the glassy water sometimes covered in mist that I have the world to myself.
There is the exuberant greeting as I am spotted coming up from the bridge, running, barking, jumping. Time to return to the dock, dogs, house and the rest of the day.

6000 WORDS

<img style="display:block; First thing this morning I am off to bring in a load of mulch. It is windy and cold with still wet ground from the rains, so today's activities will be mostly setting up trellises that just arrived, pruning some bushes that have become overgrown.
We have been seeing a few Warblers along the edge when we walk, and I saw a Palm Warbler in my birch tree this morning. Jack in the pulpit is flowering along the hedgerow, I will have to rescue some of them from the ditch bank restoration project that is occurring over there, for surely they will be smashed to oblivion by the tractor tires.
Jake and Zoë are considering my proposal that we adopt a new poodle puppy.

EYES WIDE SHUT

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SeseyVeq-mI/AAAAAAAAADs/mj-atxxHlWQ/s400/DSC00138.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326384834403826274" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 141px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SeselEzPplI/AAAAAAAAADk/c4PsJd_R7ew/s200/DSC00112.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326384606588413522" />

I have been walking that hedgerow everyday, and I missed them entirely. True, there are many of them still closed up as they push through the ground, but just as many are unfurled. How could I have been so blind not to see the Mayapples, large swaths of them. On close inspection the basal leaves of the Spring Beauties as well as the mottled leaves of the Dog Tooth Violets are also sprouting.
On the eastern edge of the farm along the woods, the Serviceberries are in full bloom. Their white blossoms stand as a stark contrast to the still bare hardwoods.
The day is bright and sunny, as opposed to the constant rain and grey of yesterday, but the price is a drop in temperature. If I dress warm and find a protected place to work I should make progress on the mulching of the east gardens.

NEW BEGINNINGS

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/Sd_yoTzHpbI/AAAAAAAAACs/zxr1Ob5n_AU/s320/DSC00097.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323240058898589106" />
Plants get to start over every year. It doesn't matter that the aphids ate holes in their leaves or mildew consumed them, they reemerge, all new and perfect each spring.
The Amelanchiers are blooming. Each tree will become ladened with the small blue berries that are so alluring that red-headed woodpeckers, cardinals and orioles risk the exposure of leaving the hedgerows of the farm to consume them. Right now the bees are swarming around blossoms clamoring for the first of the season's nectar.
The fields are getting groomed. Tractors pull the disks and plows behind turning under the cover crop left on the field last winter, and exposing the underbelly of ground and root mass. It is dark and reddish brown and now so perfectly preened. The corn will soon be planted and start its procession to harvest. Poor Zoë has lost her mountains of chicken litter that she loved to climb.
We have had a Coopers Hawk(identification by my friend Nels) stalking prey in the yard close to the house. Some of the chased end up flying into our front window wall, ending the hunt, netting the hawk a catch. It is a brutal event, necessary for it's survival, but an amazing sight to witness.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SeC1v-gXiwI/AAAAAAAAAC8/8nuXWdyAvfk/s400/DSC00105.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323454595389164290" />

SEEDLINGS

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SdvnjUggVgI/AAAAAAAAACY/dOq6WPK_v-U/s320/DSC00095.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322101978654856706" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SdvkaFRxClI/AAAAAAAAACA/VDf7STBTqZI/s200/DSC00092.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322098521412799058" />
Just briefly a reprieve from the bitter cold of the winds, then it comes back relentless. The sun is out, but the soil is saturated from yesterday's thunderstorms and the temperature is much colder. The wet cold penetrates to my bones as I kneel in the soft earth to get some seeds planted in the Kitchen garden.
How can little 1/2 inch high brussels sprouts make me feel so pleased as I peer at them in the protected cold frame? The pea, radish and lettuce shoots push strongly upward, too, and despite the unpleasant conditions I find enough pleasure here to make me continue my work. I mark out the rows for the artichoke, basil, and bulb fennel in the cold frame, carefully taking the seeds from the packets. So interesting how they vary, tiny black, elongated brown, these seeds will all need the protection of the glass to keep the soil warm enough for them to germinate. It was also a good day(at least for the seeds) to get some spinach, arugula, parsley, leeks and cilantro buried in the seed beds by the peas. Every one of them prefer the cool temperature of the soil as it is now. The beets will have to wait. The garden bed where I intended to get them started had to many small weeds sprouting, I cultivated the surface and will try agin in a few days.
Zoë comes to nose me, letting me know she is cold and bored, then she retreats to a spot under the dogwood to curl up hoping I come to my senses soon.

SUNDAY

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SdvmzPSApII/AAAAAAAAACQ/pmMswzhFscI/s400/DSC00088.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322101152618161282" />
I hope that the furious winds of yesterday do not return. I hate the wind. I busied myself inside, protected, with chores after our return from Washington, DC. The cherry trees were in full bloom, really beautiful. I was amazed on the drive at the number of Bradford pear trees that have escaped into the natural landscape. Weeds. I hope that the ornamental pears I have chosen will not turn out to be the same problem. Right now they are opening, attracting every bee in the area, mason, honey and a few bumblebees. The spring weeds are also shooting up, hurrying to flower before it gets to hot. What a bother. In my parallel universe there would only be the plants I want and none of these pesky invaders.

GREY

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SdYgMynJ2cI/AAAAAAAAABA/Be9nuCQXh-4/s320/DSC00085.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320475413901334978" />

Light grey, but definitely a grey day. There has been rain through the night, and it is off and on now. Doesn't seem to be bothering the Guinea Hens foraging about in the edges of the wheat field.
This morning's walk was uneventful until we were coming to the end of the hedge row about to cross over to the lane and back down to the house. I am not sure who became aware of them first, but there in the woods by the stream I spotted the albino Turkey hen, at about the same time Zoë threw herself over the ridge bounding down the ravine. As soon as my eye focused on her, the movement of other turkeys caught my attention. Zoë's chase sends them running, jakes, toms and hens alike, until she gets to close. This is the point they take to the air, sailing overhead and out into the field. Further ahead more emerge from the edge, traversing the field towards the pond, 12,16, no 20 trot gracefully, very unlike their fat domestic cousins.
There was a Red Tail Hawk, sitting in one of the Gingko that line the lane, perusing the fields for prey. He will be a permanent fixture on one or the other of these trees until winter comes again.

1ST DAY HOME

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pwHtBXbfNsk/SdQSnA_ss1I/AAAAAAAAAAw/zH9wZhw2hVY/s200/DSC00082.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319897521322767186" />
They want to go walk now! No more coffee, or New York Times, right now. They poke their noses into my lap, under my fingers, sit in front of me and stare. Alright! Out the door they scramble when I finally manage to get all the shoes,socks, sweaters and coats arranged. It is raining, lightly. Grey but not to cold. We take off down the lane, scuffling back and forth with each other, Jake chasing Zoe, Zoe leaping to tackle Jake. I need to watch carefully that they do not hit me from behind as they have done so many times, sending my feet to the air and my backside to the ground.
The wheat fields, now verdant from the rains that came down while I was away, have grown inches.
I finish the walk with a look around the garden to see what has bloomed or broken ground. As I examine the Pinus densiformus "Dragon's Eye", a Downy Woodpecker is not more than 6 feet away pecking hardily on the stem of last season's cattail, odd he is so bold. The little purple and white violets on the south slope are opening. They will provide color there most of the year. The apricots are blooming too. Most like to early, they will surely be nipped by frost.

SNOW

Snow? I arrived on a bright sunny day, but there is evidence of the recent heavy snows in the mountains surrounding the valley.
The forsythia is in bloom here too. The maples have the same red flowers opening, and the willows glow spring green with the flush of the opening leaves. My sister's garden is waking up. Everything waiting for just the right time for expression.
I will sit with my mother and father for these few days, enjoying the time to see them once again and wondering how I will weather the late winter of my life.

Fog, then sun

Jake, Zoe and I left the house under cover of a fog bank, which had descended to hug the fields. The sun was shinning up above it all soon dissipating the fog to reveal the familiar outlines of the edges.
They ran ahead, it was a band of deer on the far side of the creek white tails up like white surrender flags.

I saw the beaver swimming home from a night forage. Haven't seem him since last summer.

The rains of yesterday are certainly gone and the air has warmed.

Eagle's Nest

<img style="float:left; Rather brave I would say, given todays chill.

The Goldfish and Koi are starting to circle the top of the pond looking for food, they are up off the bottom they inhabit all winter. I will have to keep close watch on the herons.

The wild Turkeys are starting to feed on the edges of the fields. The males are all made up ready to attract the females, who at this moment don't seem to notice them. I would sure like to know where they hide out in the winter. I never hear or see them in the underbrush of the leafless hedgerows.

There is a tinge of red along the borders of the woods, the maple trees are in blossom and soon the door to the bee hive will be dusted with red paint from the pollen.
